Four Sisters Inn MV and Spa is the vision of Drs. Elizabeth—lovingly known as “Liz” or “Eli”—and Harry Marshall, a husband-and-wife team whose love for Martha’s Vineyard began long before they met.

Harry first fell in love with the island in the early 1980s while visiting the summer home of a medical school classmate. Liz traveled from Ann Arbor, Michigan, with college friends in the summer of 1992 and instantly fell in love with the Vineyard as well. The ocean, natural beauty, and slower pace reminded her of her childhood in the Dominican Republic.

The two met at Georgetown University Hospital in 1999 and married in 2003. Shortly thereafter, Martha’s Vineyard became an annual family destination and eventually began their search for a summer home. One early morning during their visit in 2011, while taking one of their infant twin daughters for a walk, Liz discovered a vacant lot at 14 Narragansett in the historic Copeland District and immediately knew she had found her future home on the vineyard. The Marshalls purchased the property that summer. Harry was initially perplexed by the idea of buying a vacant lot, while Liz remained optimistic about its possibilities!

In the years that followed, they stayed busy with their four daughters—Brooke, Emilia, Martha, and Maria—and serving their country, including Harry’s third deployment during the Iraq War. Plans for what they imagined would be a summer home were temporarily put on hold.

A few years later, during the COVID-19 shutdown, they finally found the time to reimagine the property. Liz began bringing a long-held dream to life: creating a luxurious bed-and-breakfast and spa where guests could connect, relax, and share stories, much like the cherished inns the Marshalls had enjoyed during their extensive travels. Liz wanted to create something more meaningful and fulfilling than simply renting their summer home to friends and visitors. She envisioned a place where she and Harry could experience the beauty of Martha’s Vineyard in the spring, summer, and fall alongside their guests, while making time for the wonderful, storytelling visits that happen on a welcoming porch.

Over the years, the Marshalls’ love for the island has deepened. Like any meaningful relationship, their connection to the Vineyard has grown through a desire to know it more fully. Although the energy of July and August is exciting, they have especially come to appreciate the island during the quieter seasons—when the trees and flowers begin to bloom and when the leaves change and fall. Visiting Martha’s Vineyard outside the traditional summer months has made them fall even more deeply in love with its magic. For the Marshalls, the Vineyard is more than a “happy place.” It is where their hearts feel full and where life slows down enough to savor time together.

 

Together, Elizabeth and Harry’s commitment to care, hospitality, and community will be at the heart of the Four Sisters experience. Their four daughters continue to inspire the inn’s name and spirit. Brooke is a strong and beautiful mother of two girls and a physical therapist in Maryland. She is a graduate of Hampton University and Northwestern University. Emilia is a witty and loving young woman, currently a senior at the Columbia University College of Engineering, where she is completing the final year of the combined Spelman/Columbia Dual Degree Engineering Program in chemical engineering. Their two youngest are twins, Martha and Maria, and they are the sweetest teenage girls you will meet. They are rising sophomore high school students at The McDonogh School in Maryland and Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., respectively. They are keeping them young and busy with all of their activities, sports and travel!
